Open Fairways is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk and underprivileged children ages 7-17 through the game of golf and the life lessons it teaches.
PGA Tour Pro Craig Stadler serves as our Honorary Chairman, and the United States Golf Association and PGA tour pro Kirk Triplett are among those who have endorsed the program. Five principles guide our mission:
1. Teach honor, discipline and respect through the rules of golf
2. Provide a high quality sports based program that directly and positively impacts self-confidence
3. Support at-risk youth through adult interaction
4. Create opportunities for youth to improve and build social competencies
5. Offer continued access to golf equipment and facilities to play and practice
In 2005, Open Fairways touched the lives of over 1,000 children, bringing our six year total to over 4,000 kids from homes for abused and abandoned youth, local shelters, public housing projects and other facilities for at-risk and under-privileged kids.
Four-day clinics (36 kids per clinic), taught by PGA Teaching Professionals and supported by volunteer mentors, introduce participants to basic swing techniques, rules, etiquette and the game's core concepts of honor, etiquette, and respect. Upon completion of the program, participants are asked to sign a "player contract", pledging to stay in school, off drugs, and out of gangs. In return, they are entitled to the free use of equipment and range balls at our designated "In the Fairway" facilities until the age of 18.
Continued access is extremely important to Open Fairways' goal of becoming the nation's premier organization dedicated to providing a positive golf-based experience that encourages adult interaction and provides a safe environment to build social and athletic skills. Open Fairways plans to continually improve and expand the scope of our programs to reach out to these special children in cities throughout the United States.
